Building & testing a local mesa version for DOOM: The Dark Ages

The “Revelations” DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages introduced a texture problem with newer mesa versions. A fix was implemented but I did not want to wait for the official release. The only option was to compile the branch myself and run this local version against DOOM. I did all of the following steps on my Ryzen AI 350 Zenbook with CachyOS. I began by cloning the official repo and following the build setup steps in the official docs. Since there was no specific guidance for Arch, I tried to collect the packages with this command (I might have had some of the dependencies already on my machine prior to building mesa): [Weiterlesen...]

Linux for gaming is long ready

In 2005, when my then-roommate decided to install Linux on a contemporary student notebook, I was sceptical — and rightly so: almost nothing worked, no WiFi, no sound, let alone any cutting-edge Windows games from the time. The experiment was nuked a day later. 17 years later, Valve put a Linux gaming machine in my palms and the world changed. To be honest, they had already tried this in 2015 with the first and failed iteration of the Steam Machine, but the translation layer Proton that brings Windows games over was not ready until 2018. Enabling FSR 4 on GE-Proton under Bazzite Linux

TL;DR: In Silent Hill 2 or any other (non-Vulkan) game that supports FSR 3.1 add the following Steam launch options and be sure to select the latest GE-Proton PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 SteamDeck=0 %command% The long story: make sure GE-Proton is installed and selected for the game in properties / compatibility. Under Bazzite I used Proton+ https://github.com/Vysp3r/ProtonPlus the game must support FSR 3.1 or the auto upgrade will not work Vulkan games like Doom: The Dark Ages are currently not supported for FSR 4 see https://github.com/optiscaler/OptiScaler/wiki/FSR4-Compatibility-List under properties and command line options add PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %command% some games disable certain options (like Silent Hill 2) when under Proton/SteamOS and you must add SteamDeck=0 as well to be able to select FSR 3.1 to verify that the upgrade worked, use the additional switch PROTON_FSR4_INDICATOR=1 that will add a text overlay to your game only RX 9000 cards (i.e. 9060 or 9070) support this method a hack exists for older cards Links: [Weiterlesen...]

Just in case anybody searches for this (like I did), you CAN copy the saves over. They will need to be renamed. Get the save paths from pcgamingwiki, then copy the xbox game pass saves somewhere so you can work on them. Disable Steam Cloud Save for Gears Tactics (you’ll reenable later). Boot up Steam version and sign into XBL. This will pull down your overarching Gears Tactics save, but no campaign slots are included sadly. Create new saves in the Steam version (boot up game > new campaign > skip tutorial > save and quit). *Rename the copied game pass saves (step 1) to match the Steam saves, ignoring the smallest files. Basically name the files that are over 400KB to “GearGameSaveGame_Slot”, “GearGameSaveGame_Slot_1”, “GearGameSaveGame_Slot_2”… at random. See note below for more. Copy the newly renamed saves into the steam save folder for Gears Tactics. Boot up the game. Your saves should now be accessible to continue. Reenable Steam Cloud Saves. *After renaming the files and booting up the game, if you see no saves, try changing around the naming and booting the game up again. So for EX change ‘…Slot’ to ‘…Slot_1’ and ‘…Slot_1’ back to ‘…Slot’. Using a Hex Editor you can suss out which one is which, but >I guessed and got it right the second time, and then it all just worked. [Weiterlesen...]
